As my friend and former broadcast partner, Wes Durham, says: “There is a reason the boys in Vegas live in big houses and drive nice cars. They know stuff.”
I’ll readily admit that I don’t know anything about picking games, particularly against the spread. But I promised the boys at TMG Sports that I would give it the old college try. So here goes. And remember: This is for entertainment purposes only.
This week’s games:
Clemson giving 39 ½ vs. Kent State
Texas giving 19 vs. Maryland
N.C. State giving 5 vs. South Carolina in Charlotte.
Alabama vs. Florida State in Atlanta (48 ½)
LSU vs. BYU in New Orleans (47)
Wyoming at Iowa (49 ½) [membership level="0"] The rest of this article is available to subscribers only - to become a subscriber click here.[/membership] [membership]
Kent State at Clemson: A lot of people think Clemson is going to fall off the face of the earth because Deshaun Watson left. No, no, no. Kelly Bryant takes over at quarterback and the Tigers are still loaded, especially on defense, which will score at least one touchdown to insure the cover.
Score: Clemson 49, Kent State 7.
Maryland at Texas: Tom Herman makes his debut as the Longhorns’ head coach and will want to impress the home folks with a show of his shiny new offense. But I’ve always been impressed by Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin who knows a thing or two about defense. Durkin will try to shorten the game to keep it close. Texas wins but can’t cover the 19.
Score: Texas 27, Maryland 14.
N.C. State vs. South Carolina in Charlotte: With offensive play makers like quarterback Jake Bentley and wide receiver Deebo Samuels, South Carolina will be able to move the ball on anybody. The problem is the Gamecocks don’t have enough stout bodies on the defensive line to hang in there for four quarters with the better teams on their schedule. N.C. State has a lot of talent, especially in the defensive front. This is going to be a wild game. N.C. State wins but the Wolfpack can’t cover the five.
Pick: South Carolina
Score: N.C. State 31, South Carolina 27
