Brutal. Just brutal.
After my best Saturday of the season the Football Gods decided that your scribe needed an extra dose of humility. Specifically:
I picked Alabama to beat LSU and it did, 24-10. But the Crimson Tide didn’t cover 21 ½.
Auburn won at Texas A&M, as expected, but won by exactly 15 (42-27), which was the number. In this world, as I understand it, a tie is a loss.
I thought Florida was sick of losing and would rally behind interim coach Randy Shannon. It couldn’t have been much worse if half the Gators had missed the team plane to Columbia, Mo. That final: Missouri 45, Florida 16.
I should have known that Kirby Smart was not going to tack on style points against Will Muschamp, his old roommate. Georgia wins 24-10 but didn’t cover the 24 ½.
I’ve decided that Kentucky is just good enough to break your heart. Ole Miss scored with five seconds left to win 38-37.
Clemson was favored by 7 ½ at N.C. State and the Tigers won by seven, 38-31.
Put it all together and you have a crowd-pleasing 0-6 to run our record to 26-34 after 10 weeks.
I promise I’ll try to do better this week. On to the picks: [membership level="0"] The rest of this article is available to subscribers only - to become a subscriber click here.[/membership] [membership]
FLORIDA (Plus 7 ½) at SOUTH CAROLINA: I don’t know if the Florida players have any pride left or if they will even show up. But I’m going with the home team and the fact that Will Muschamp would dearly love to beat his former employer.
The winner: South Carolina.
The score: South Carolina 21, Florida 10.
ALABAMA AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (Plus 14): Alabama lost two more linebackers in the slug fest against LSU. The Crimson Tide has a lot of players but that’s four front line linebackers that are done for the season. Alabama wins and picks up a late defensive touchdown for a back-door cover.
The winner: Alabama.
The score: Alabama 30, Mississippi State 14.
GEORGIA AT AUBURN (Plus 2 ½): Georgia has already clinched a spot in the SEC championship game but, as the old coach once said, the Bulldogs have bigger fish to fry. This will be the best defense against the run that Georgia has seen all season. Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm is going to have to make some plays. Georgia wins it on a late field goal.
The winner: Georgia
The score: Georgia 24, Auburn 21.
KENTUCKY AT VANDERBILT (Plus 3): I am tempted to take Vanderbilt here because of Kentucky’s devastating loss to Ole Miss last Saturday. But the Commodores have had a tough season and look a bit tired. Kentucky wins and covers the three points.
The winner: Kentucky
The score: Kentucky 24, Vanderbilt 17
NOTRE DAME AT MIAMI (Plus 3): This is one of the biggest games “The U” has played in a long, long time. I was flat wrong last week when I picked Virginia Tech to beat the Hurricanes. I just like the toughness of Notre Dame. But I could be wrong--again.
The winner: Notre Dame
The score: Notre Dame 21, Miami 17.
TENNESSEE (Plus 11) AT MISSOURI: Missouri has won three straight games since a 1-5 start. Now two of those wins came against non-conference cupcakes (Idaho, UConn) but last week the Tigers really took it to Florida 45-16. Mizzou QB Drew Lock is on fire and leads the nation with 31 touchdown passes. Tennessee hasn’t won an SEC game this season and the Vols won’t win their first on Saturday.
The winner: Missouri
The score: Missouri 35, Tennessee 21.
