LARAMIE – For the first time since 2005, four Cowgirls will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, held Wednesday through Saturday, June 5-8 in Austin, Texas, at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Jerayah Davis will compete in the 100-meter dash, long jump and 4x100 meter relay, and Ja’la Henderson will run on that same relay team and compete in the triple jump. Jordan Edmonds and Shayla Howell make up the rest of the second-fastest 4x100m relay team in school history.
“It’s quite the honor,” said UW head track & field coach Bryan Berryhill. “All the student-athletes we’re sending out there have worked really hard all year, competed really well all year and they’ve earned this opportunity to go out there. To be the first team on the women’s side to send multiple student-athletes since 2005 says a lot about how special of a group they are.”
Davis is the first Cowgirl ever to qualify for three events at a national championship, while Henderson is the first Cowgirl since 2004-05 to qualify for back-to-back national championship meets. She competed in the long jump and triple jump last season.
Additionally, the 4x100 meter relay team is the first Cowgirl relay team to compete at a national championship since the 4x400 meter relay team in 2005.
The relay team will kick off the event on Thursday at 6:02 p.m. (MT) on Thursday in the national semifinal. The top 12 teams will advance to Saturday’s national final that starts at 4:32 p.m. (MT). The Cowgirls are running in the third heat and have a season-best time of 44.69 seconds.
Davis will continue a busy day on Thursday with the 100 meter dash national semifinal at 7:16 p.m. (MT) and the long jump national final at 7:30 p.m. (MT). She will run in the third heat of the 100 meter dash and will jump in the second flight of the long jump. She has a season-best 100 meter dash time of 11.18, which is a school record, and a season-best long jump of 21 feet, 2.5 inches, which is also a school record.
Saturday will continue after the 4x100 meter relay national final with Ja’la Henderson competing in the triple jump national final at 4:40 p.m. (MT). She will compete in the second flight and has a season-best jump of 43-6, set at the NCAA West Preliminary two weekends ago. She is the school’s record holder with a leap of 44-3.5. Lastly, the women’s 100 meter dash national final is slated for 5:22 p.m.
Last season, Henderson was the lone Cowgirl representative at the national championships, and she placed 15th in the triple jump with a mark of 42-8.25 to earn Second-Team All-America status. She also placed 17th in the long jump with a leap of 20-1 to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades.
