BOISE – The Wyoming tennis team won its second match of the weekend with a 4-2 victory over the Boise State Broncos on Sunday afternoon. The Cowgirls won at Utah State on Friday.
The victory improved the Cowgirls dual record to 13-6, 3-1 in league play.
“Today was another great win on the road for this team. Boise State came out ready in singles and really took it down to the wire,” head coach Dean Clower said. “Winning road matches in this conference is tough especially against a well-coached team as Boise State. I’ve always felt we’ve had a good team, but weren’t battle tested. Now I think we are ready to go and this weekend showed the depth of our team. We still have some things to work on and this week will give us that chance to be ready for Colorado State.”
In doubles against the Broncos, seniors Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg defeated Lilian Poling and Wilhelmina Palmer, 6-2, while freshmen Ida Krause and Mihaela Kaftanova beat Wiktoria Nosek and Emily Strande, 6-4. Junior Ana Royo and freshman Maria Oreshkina were down 5-4 against Vanessa Timm and Frankie Trella at the No. 3 spot which wasn’t completed.
The Broncos’ Poling got Boise State on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Koonik. Kaftanova followed that up with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sydnie Binder at the No. 6 spot, while Royo beat Timm, 7-5, 6-2, to give the Cowgirls a 3-1 lead. At the No. 4 spot Nosek beat freshman Ana Fernandez, 6-2, 6-4. Oreshkina clinched the match with a three set win against Strande, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. van Der Ploeg was down 7-6 (7-1), 4-3 against Palmer in a match that wasn’t finished.
The Cowgirls will close out the regular conference season on Saturday against the Colorado State Rams. The match is set for 12 p.m. MT at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts.
